Time between ceremony and reception?

We had a few hours in between our ceremony and reception and I would not recommend it. My parents ended up hosting most of the out of town family and guests at their house for those few hours. My poor dad was running around like a chicken with his head cut off because my stepmother was ill and unable to help at all. I really felt like it was poor planning on my part to not have had the reception right away.
